5 activities cats love to engage in whenever possible

Cats love to scratch and claw

It is instinctive for cats to scratch and scratch on various surfaces as a way of sharpening their claws. In fact, they have a lot of fun doing it.

In addition to sharpening her claws, scratching can help relax and rejuvenate cats. Think of it as the human equivalent of a long, gentle stretch when your muscles are tired or sore. A quick scratching session on a cat tree or scratching post can instantly wake up a tired cat.

Cats love their daily playtime

Playtime is serious business for cats, from kittens through their early years. It doesn’t take much to keep a cat entertained—it’ll play with anything from lint and thread, to trick-or-treat cat toys—but it’s a vital part of its health and development. Not only does playtime harken back to their days in the wild when they had to hunt, stalk, and catch their prey, but it also keeps them exercised, engaged, and happy.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of cat toys on the market, but your cat might love to play games, like hide-and-seek, too. No matter your cat chooses to play, it’s important to sneak in a few minutes each day.

Cats love to watch birds

It is not uncommon to see cats curled up on window sills. Why? It is a prime location for bird watching! Whether cats love to watch birds because they are prey or just because the action gets their attention, some cats can spend hours watching birds every day.

If your cat likes to curl up in windows, be sure to protect her skin from the harsh rays of the sun, especially if she has light-colored fur. Try to limit her hours by the window when the sun is strongest—between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.—and talk to your vet about kitty-approved sunscreens.

Cats love their humans

Although cats are often portrayed as solitary animals, they do need love, attention, and companionship—and they love getting it from their humans. The ways cats say “I love you” are a little different than we humans say.

Some signs that your cat likes you include purring, draping (or resting her head on you), sleeping on or near you, meowing, licking, and even sticking her bottom in your face. Yes, really.

Cats love to eat fresh and nutritious foods

It is unlikely that you will want to dive into a large plate of spoiled food at dinner time. The same goes for your cat. Not only does spoiled food taste bad, but it can host different types of bacteria, such as salmonella and staph as well.

When you serve kitty meals, be sure to check the expiration dates on both the wet and dry food. This will ensure that you are only feeding her fresh, nutritious and safe meals.
