Buying a Crayfish as a Pet Here are four things to think about

You think you'd want to have a crayfish as a pet? Keep in mind that owning an exotic pet comes with a wide variety of responsibilities and considerations.

The aquatic habitat

To begin, you are going to need to make an investment in a fish tank that comes equipped with both a water pump and a filter. You should also think about the dimensions of the tank if, in addition to the crayfish that you want to keep as a pet, you want to keep any other kinds of fish. Crayfish are known to be aggressive scavengers, which explains why this is the case. They are omnivores, meaning that they like eating a wide variety of foods. This applies to your fish as well. If you want to have a variety of fish in your tank, you may find that you need a larger container for them.

Water Changes

Crayfish are creatures that are known for their resilience. That is to say, they are able to survive in virtually any filth. Crayfish make great pets; however, you should be aware that they require frequent water changes. Because these creatures produce a large amount of waste, but also because they may make your tank seem unattractive very quickly and create an unhealthy environment for any other fish that may be kept in your fish tank, you should avoid keeping them together. It is not difficult to perform routine water changes; rather, it is something that you should make a point to accomplish on a regular basis. Some people do them twice per week, while others do them once per week.

The Other Species of Fish

If you do really decide to bring other fish into your fish tank with your pet crayfish, you will need to take into consideration the fish you pick as tank mates in order to ensure the health and happiness of both your crayfish and the other fish. Crayfish will do best in an aquarium with fish that swim at the top of the tank, are quick, and/or are aggressive themselves. Having said that, there is never any assurance that a fish will make it through cohabitation with a crayfish. It is always conceivable that you will wake up one morning to find that one of your fish is gone from its tank. This might happen for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, that has happened to me in the past.

A Concealed Location

Believe it or not, other species of fish are capable of attacking crayfish as well as other crustaceans. When a crayfish sheds its exoskeleton, also known as molting, or when your own pet crayfish does so, this is most likely to occur. When a crayfish loses its exoskeleton, it becomes fragile and easily damaged. Additionally, he is not overly aggressive. As a result of this, other fish will occasionally attempt to eat him. Because of this, it is of the utmost importance to have hideouts in your fish tank for when your crayfish are going through their molting process. In fact, having a place to hide will be enjoyable for your pet crayfish anyway. When they aren't on the lookout, hunting everything in sight, these creatures like to dig underground and hide when they're not actively hunting. Your pet crayfish can make a home inside a piece of PVC pipe, or you can get them for an affordable price at almost any pet store or online.
